What are Dental Implants?
A Dental Implant is an artificial tooth root made from titanium which is placed into the jawbone using a simple surgical procedure. Dental implants are a long-term solution for patients with missing teeth, alleviating the difficulties that dentures can often cause. The use of Dental Implants provides a highly cosmetic and long-lasting alternative to dentures when you need to replace one or more teeth.
How it works?
Over a period of several months the implant becomes integrated into the bone and provides a stable platform to support replacement teeth. In order to support replacement teeth, Dental Implants normally have some form of internal screw thread that allows a variety of different components to be fitted. When they are fitted these components provide the foundation for the long-term support of crowns, bridges or dentures.
Following this healing period, the dentist can start restoring the new tooth with a crown or bridgework. Alternatively, two or more implants can be used to hold a denture in tightly to improve natural functions.
The procedure involves a period of initial recovery, while the implant fuses to the bone. This process is known as osteointegration, which describes the fusion of the titanium implant with your natural bone tissue, this has a 90% success rate.
Advantages of Dental Implants
Eat a normal diet
You can look forward to eating again with dental implants. Dental implants restore a far higher level to normal mouth function for our patients than traditional dentures. You will be able to enjoy a normal, varied diet as biting and chewing efficiency is comparable to that of a natural tooth.
Speech
Traditional dentures often cause problems for patients due to having to adjust their speech to deal with a “foreign object” in the mouth. This is compounded by the fact that missing teeth will cause the jawbone structure to degrade over time, further impacting upon speaking ability. Understandably, this can cause a great deal of embarrassment and a loss of confidence. With Dental Implants these problems are completely eliminated, the implant prevents the degradation of jawbone structure, while the new tooth or teeth will not move around and will soon feel completely natural to the patient.
Protection for remaining teeth
Missing teeth can cause a domino effect, as the degraded bone structure will impact upon the adjacent natural teeth and roots. Dental implants will completely eliminate this problem.
